Diagnosing Allen-Bradley PLCs via LEDs
Allen-Bradley processors include status LEDs that indicate hardware or firmware issues. This guide helps you interpret these indicators.
1. Solid Red OK LED
A solid red OK LED indicates a major hardware fault or firmware crash. Action: Connect to the processor using RSLinx and Studio 5000 to read the fault code. If the controller is unresponsive, inspect the CPU board for damaged logic components or a power supply issue.
2. Flashing Red OK LED
This indicates that the processor has lost its program memory, often due to a depleted backup battery during a power cycle. Action: Replace the lithium battery, clear the controller memory, and reload the program from backup.
3. Flashing Green I/O LED
This indicates a communication issue with one or more I/O modules on the backplane. Action: Check the module connections, clean the backplane interface, and test for damaged communication chips.
